Optical Liquid Silicone Rubber
Optical liquid silicone rubber is replacing glass for many optical and lighting uses. Today, as LEDs increasingly supplant metal filaments in light bulbs, optical liquid silicone rubber (LSR)—in addition to plastics like polycarbonate and acrylic resins—is replacing glass in many optical applications including silicone lens covers and silicone light pipes.
Optical Liquid Silicone Rubber Advantages
Optically clear grades of LSR polymers offer advantages over both glass and thermoplastic and thermoset optical polymers. Optical silicone rubber has been around awhile. The chemical structures of liquid silicone rubber and glass have elements in common. Like glass, however the additional radicals in its structure is what makes silicone rubbers opaque or translucent by nature. Although common in some regards, the mechanical and physical properties of Liquid Silicone Rubber are superior to glass and carbon-based polymers. In relation to hardness, LSR can be as flexible as 5 Shore A, or as hard as glass (approximately 90 Shore A). Its density is also a plus, it ranges between 1.1 and 2.3 g/cm3, significantly lower than glass.
Optical LSR is high transparency, which is almost as transparent as the best glass across both visible and UV spectra.
Optical liquid silicone’s weight is lighter than glass & other plastic materials, like polycarbonate (PC) and acrylic (PMMA) resins.
High transparency liquid silicone material is far more soft than glass, reducing the chance of breakage. The hardness/ durometer of optical LSR is particularly valuable in applications like silicone vehicle lenses where lights can be exposed to a variety of vibrations and blows.
The Optical Liquid Silicone is also anti-scratch and anti-crack and resistant to vibrations, which helps preserve both its physical integrity and optical properties. The material also does not discolor or lose transparency with age or with exposure to heat or UV.
Due to the material is liquid state, Optically Clear Liquid Silicone can be mixed with colorants to extend its lighting capabilities.
The material’s plasticity also allows designers and engineers to combine a lens with a seal to reduce assembly cost, development cost, etc.
Optical Liquid Silicone Rubber Applications
Almost any application that requires an optical component from imagery, scanning, light detection or illumination, is a candidate for optically clear liquid silicone. Optical liquid silicone rubber can be found in bar-code scanners, document scanners, spectrometers and particle counters. Telecommunications products, microlens arrays, diffractive optical elements, LED lights are other applications where optically clear liquid silicone rubber is growing in use. Additional applications include:
Solar Collectors
LEDs
Portable Electronics
Light Pipes
Windows
Optical Filters
Prisms
Beam Splitters
All Types of Lenses
Notes:
It is important that mold surface imperfections need to be eliminated. Optical grade liquid silicone rubber “copy” every feature on the mold surface. Furthermore, good surface quality will improve the refractive index of the product. According to the Society of Plastics Industry (SPI), the mold surface should be SPI-A2 which is achieved with a Grade No. 2 Diamond Buff, obtaining a roughness between 1 and 2 mm Ra, which will produce a very shiny surface finish.
Xiamen Better Silicone Rubber Co., LTD, established in the year of 2018, is the production base of Xiamen Better Silicone Import and Export Co., LTD (established in 2015), who is specialized in manufacturing precision silicone rubber parts, LSR (liquid silicone rubber) parts and plastic components.
Better Silicone aims at providing the comprehensive one-stop solutions and service throughout the entire production process, from product design analysis, mold design and mold making, sample & prototype, mass production stage and then ready-to-use products (finished product).
Our Products can be widely used in Electronic Field, Medical Field, Auto parts & machinery parts field, etc.
